An in-depth weekend intensive
Study herbal constituents in a unique, visually-oriented way, integrated with the characteristics and actions of botanical medicines from clinical practice

Join us for an intensive survey of the major classes and subclasses of phytochemicals important in botanical medicine and a practical introduction to the basic concepts of herbal chemistry that are relevant to the understanding and practice of botanical medicine.

This weekend intensive course will give the herbalist, naturopath, pharmacist, physician, or herbal products manufacturer the tools to understand and integrate concepts of herbal chemistry and constituents into their practices.

Using colorful PowerPoint presentations with traditional line drawings, animated 3D molecular models, and an extensive collection of medicinal plant photographs and botanical illustrations, we will explore the nature and relationships of hundreds of phytochemicals, their biosynthetic origins, their properties according to research, their contributions to the actions of medicinal plants, and their significance to the practitioner. This fully integrated approach brings phytochemistry out of the realm of abstraction and into a tangible and practical realm of experience.

The Medicinal Plant Constituents course will cover the following topics :

1. Foundations of Herbal Chemistry: fundamentals of phytochemistry which are relevant to the study of plant constituents including the etymology of chemical names, atoms, bonding, molecular architecture, functional groups, polarity, solubility, ring systems, stereochemistry, & pH. A non-mathematical approach that assumes no previous study in chemistry, but revives basic principles for those who have some background in the subject.

2. The Carbohydrates: explores medicinally significant carbohydrates including oligosaccharides (FOS), immunomodulating polysaccharides, gums,  mucilages, dietary fibers, & organic acids.

3. The Lipids: fatty acids, dietary oils, phospholipids, and alkamides including isobutylamides..

4. The Amino Acids & Derivatives: amino acids, aromatic amines, glucosinolates, sulfur compounds, cyanogenic glycosides, methylxanthines, peptides, proteins, enzymes, & lectins.

5. The Phenolic Compounds: simple phenols & polyphenols: phenolic acids, phenylpropanoids & derivatives, coumarins, lignans, stilbenoids, xanthones, styrylpyrones, flavonoids, isoflavonoids, benzofurans, chromones, quinones, & phloroglucinol derivatives.

6. The Terpenes: essential oil constituents, hemiterpenes, monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, diterpenes, triterpenes, saponins, & tetraterpenes (carotenoids).

7. The Steroids: phytosterols, steroidal saponins, cardiac glycosides, & others.

8. The Alkaloids: the major classes of alkaloids important in botanical medicine including isoquinoline, betalain, pyrrolizidine, & indole.

9. Organoleptic Experience of Herbal Constituents: theory & practice in learning to identify constituents by their sensory properties & judging herbal potency & quality with organoleptic evaluation.
